What is EMDR Therapy?

At Bison Family Therapy, we believe healing doesn't have to take forever, and EMDR therapy is one of the most powerful reasons why. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that works with your brain's own natural healing ability to reduce the emotional weight of painful memories. Rather than talking through trauma in exhaustive detail, EMDR guides you through brief, focused moments of recalling distressing experiences while your therapist directs a gentle back-and-forth stimulus, most often eye movements, but sometimes soft hand-tapping or audio tones. This bilateral rhythm activates your brain's information processing system, allowing stuck memories to be reprocessed and released.

Your Brain Was Built to Heal

Think about how your body heals a physical wound, given the right conditions, it knows exactly what to do. Your mind works the same way. When a distressing experience overwhelms your brain's natural processing system, that memory can become lodged, keeping you emotionally stuck and causing ongoing pain. EMDR therapy works by removing that block. Once the processing system is reactivated, your brain can do what it was always designed to do: move toward health. Research consistently shows that EMDR can produce results that once required years of traditional therapy, often in a fraction of the time.

Healing That Fits Your Life

At Bison Family Therapy, our trained clinicians use structured EMDR protocols tailored to your unique history and goals. Whether you're navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, or deeply rooted negative beliefs, EMDR meets you where you are, at your pace, in a space built for safety and trust. As a marriage and family therapy practice, we also understand how unresolved pain affects the people around you. Healing yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do for your relationships. If you're ready to take that first step, we're here to walk alongside you.
